epiphany

last week, after a nice long fight to two squash victories (and one loss, but let's not talk about that), i had an epiphany. Chris and I were waiting for the bus talking about work and random stuff when Chris asked me, What is your dream job? And I blurted out: To replace Terry Gross as the host of Fresh Air after she retires!

suddenly the storm clouds parted and it was as if Wisdom herself was shining down on me.

hahaha. just kidding.

This doesn't mean that I am gunning for Terry's job (as if! she is the master), or that I am going to make a switch to radio broadcasting, but it reinforced for me three things:

1. How much I love and admire Terry Gross. I've renewed my commitment to listening to her every day. She is one of the best interviewers out there (Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley are also tops).
2. My commitment to good, powerful, effective story telling
3. How lucky I am to get to do what I love!

for the truly sublime, check out the fresh air interview with Tracy Morgan. how she maintains her composure and continues to probe Tracy with insightful questions in the midst of his jokes, tears, and run on sentences is beyond me. one winning line from that interview:
"That little 17-year-old boy — he's grown up. He's a man now. And when I was angry, when I was younger, I was in a cocoon. Now I'm a beautiful, black butterfly."

wowzers

going veggie

this weekend was one big huge meatfest, with every meal culminating in some obscene amount of beef, chicken, or pork. i did not feel right yesterday after finishing up a nice lunch of meatloaf and potatoes at church.

so i'm going veggie this week to cleanse my system a little bit ... meanwhile, I'll be dreaming of this galbee, which I ate Saturday night. *drooooool*

opening day

we went to the nationals' opening day a few weeks ago. unfortunately, it was freezing cold, but there was nothing like skipping work in the middle of the day to go to a baseball game and eat a ben's chili dog with chris.

they played the braves, chris' least favorite team

the weather was terrible

the view

scoreboard!
the grey haziness contrasting with the bright primary colors of the field actually made for some really lovely photos. chris got me a package of tickets for Christmas so we've got a few more games this season, including a game on July 4 against the Cubs!

go baseball!

oh the joy of dating a nonkorean

chris: how do you say butt in korean?
  me: goongdang
goongdangee, if you want to be cute

where's waldo?

found the most comfortable striped shirt at a local thrift store two days ago. wahoo.

p.s. do you own a pair of black skinny jeans? If not, you must get a pair right away because they will become a wardrobe staple. I wear mine about twice a week -- dressed up and down -- and i thank my lucky stars every time i pull them on. (as in, "thank my lucky stars these still fit!") black skinnies. get into it!

lunch

had a little dinner partay last night at my apartment. the menu was fresh homemade pesto with quinoa pasta, lemon herb salmon, roasted asparagus, portobello mushrooms, salad, no-knead bread, and gelato for dessert! it was such a delightful meal that I completely forgot to take photos.

behold, the only remnants of last night's feast: today's lunch.

three cheers for simple food :)

summer sandals

snatched up these babies today!

(marais)

exciting :)

p.s. what do we think? smaller pictures? larger ones? the larger pictures were starting to feel a little obnoxious ... but i dunno. thoughts?

jane

i love me a good period film so when an invitation came through to see the new jane eyre with some work friends, I jumped at the chance! i thought it was fabulous and  mia wasikowska is my new favorite actress. (she played alice with a lot of gumption, and is particularly luminous in this film.)

i'd actually never read jane eyre (as a lit major, I realize this is rather shameful), so as soon as I got home, I downloaded a free copy onto my kindle and started reading. i'm officially obsessed :)

if you find yourself with a free evening, go watch!

i need your help!

friends, i need your help. Chris has generously offered to make me a bookshelf for some miscellany that I have lying around in my room (plants, record player, sewing machine, etc.). Which design do you think looks better? the only difference is that the second design has the posts sticking out of the top (ignore that random floating board). thoughts??

inspiration

i wasn't going to post this but I can't stop thinking about it so I figured I'd share. I caught this over on swiss-miss -- it's a really short little talk, but I can't get the message out of my head: "I cannot depend on others to make things happen. I'll just have to do it myself."

i think we forget this as adults. as a kid you think, when i'm an adult, i'm going to do X. I'm going to eat ice cream for breakfast. I'm going to wear whatever i want. I'm going to stay out late. and then you become an adult and the limitations you were hoping to shed just ... remain, and YOU are the one imposing them on YOURSELF! it's amazing to me.

ultimately, you end up limiting yourself. you draw boundaries around your abilities and voluntarily secede some of your own personal agency. you let the limitations of your workplace determine the limitations of your life and you forget that actually, your personal productivity does not have to end at close of business.

if you are lacking complete fulfillment in your work place, consider starting a personal project. I happen to love my job, but even still, time constraints leave me unable to do stuff that interest me. well, that shouldn't be the case. i'm hoping to start a personal project soon ... i will share it with you all in a few weeks!
